5 things to do for Mother’s Day this year to totally spoil Mum or yourself!

The second Sunday in May is always one to look forward to. It’s a special day where we get to focus on the wonderful women in our lives, that seriously deserve to be celebrated, supported and spoiled – of course!

Whether it’s your own Mother, Mother In Law, Aunty, Sister, friend or yourself – It’s the perfect excuse to spend the day with your special ones, enjoying time together, a little indulgence and making the most of a day dedicated to Mummas -the total queens that they are!

With a bunch of exciting events on the go, delicious food to eat and beautiful places to see, we’re sharing our top 5 things to do this Mother’s Day.

If you’re in Melbs…

The Mother’s Day Classic Fun Run

The Annual Mother’s Day Classic has been running for 21 years and counting, to support an amazing cause. It’s a morning fun run (or walk, we can assure you we would certainly be walking!) dedicated to support The Pink Ribbon National Breast Cancer Foundation raising much needed awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Research. The aim of the morning is to deliver an inspirational, fun and healthy event on Mother’s Day, and bring people together to remember those who have been touched by breast cancer. It’s the perfect opportunity to get out and about, and enjoy a walk around the beautiful Alexandra Gardens and the Tan track. It’s such a worthy cause and a great way to get active with the whole family this Mother’s Day!

Lunch at The Conservatory

If you’re a Melbourne local and you really want to spoil mum this year (or drop the hint to your family) we definitely suggest Mother’s Day lunch at the Conservatory at Crown. Indulgence is literally at an all time high – absolutely no diets here please. Think high end buffet style dining with all the trimmings, seafood, just about every cuisine you could ever want, a dessert bar (oh my god – amazing!) and French champagne flowing. Finish with a stroll along South Bank to (attempt) to work off everything consumed! Just lovely!

If you’re a Sydney sider…

A Day At The Gallery

Is there anything better than an afternoon roaming the Art Gallery of NSW with your mum and seeing the latest exhibition? And what makes it even better? A spread at Chiswick, one of Sydney’s favourite restaurants. Mother’s Day is all about sharing delicious food together and of course a cheeky vino, and why not do it while enjoying the gorgeous view overlooking Woolloomooloo pier. Featuring a fresh, seasonal menu with a focus on local produce and a casual dining experience vibe! Yes please!

The women behind Wine Unplugged & Pacha Mama – the wine label with no barriers!

It’s no surprise that the brains (and hands) behind one of our all time favourite wine labels – Pacha Mama, are two fabulous female winemakers, who set out to create stylish and highly individual wines that leave you wanting more. At Sunday Wine Co, we absolutely love their passion and philosophy for wine, so this month we’re shining some light on the dynamic wine duo and one of their four projects together –  Pacha Mama! Much like the Incan goddess herself, this label brings fruit to the vine and joy to the world!

(Image sourced via Wed Shed)

Now based in the picturesque Yarra Valley, the centre of Victoria’s wine country, Nina and Callie had wine running through their veins, with both lady’s fathers working within the industry. However, it wasn’t until the two crossed paths in 2009 – rather unexpectedly given their varied backgrounds; Nina had studied Microbiology (which she loved!) and was working as winemaker for Catalina Sounds in Marlborough, New Zealand. Callie, a Psychology and Criminology graduate turned Qualified Chef, who had a serious love for wine, was working in restaurants when she realised that “[while] you may be creating something magical, you don’t get the joy of sharing it when you’re tucked away in a kitchen.” The grape seed was planted when Nina was working with Callie’s Dad – The pair met and hit it off. Pacha Mama was born!

(Image sourced via Wed Shed)

The two source fruit from their favourite wine regions throughout Victoria from talented, meticulous growers whose number one priority is to nurture the fruit. The two believe believe this showcases that variety is best and “having no barriers to what we can produce, other than our imaginations!” is the secret to their Pacha Mama magic. The girls are passionate about producing wine that takes them back to their past but also represents where they want to be in the future. As massive foodies, Callie and Nina create wines that are the perfect accompaniment to any meal, and that they themselves want to drink and share with their loved ones.

(Image via @WineUnplugged. Nina and Pacha Mama Chardonnay in the making.)

The girls mention that there is no such thing as a typical day for a winemaker – which is one of the most exciting things about the job, particularly around vintage time which definitely keeps them on their toes (lots of coffee required!). They say the best and most fun part about being a winemaker for your own small business is the ability to create something incredible from the humble grape, constantly learning and watching wine evolve over time. Nina and Callie are set to continue to produce wine that they’re immensely proud of and that they themselves simply enjoy drinking. We can’t wait to taste what else is in the works! Lastly, we thought we’d ask the duo two very important questions…

What is your ultimate wine philosophy?

“You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Using great fruit, just like using fresh regional produce in cooking, is key to making quality wine.”

What are you drinking at the moment? And what do you drink it with?

“The just released 2016 Pacha Shiraz which is looking vibrant and juicy and goes perfectly with our favourite meal – chocolate!!

Thanks for chatting ladies! If you’re more a light red fan – Pacha Mama Pinot Noir is for you! A delicate, easy-going red that features in our ‘Light Reds’ pack. If bold whites are more your thing, you simply must try Pacha Mama Chardonnay – a punchy, floral white with body, available in our ‘If you love Chardonnay’ pack.

Easter, Review, Wine

Hunt for the perfect wine this Easter long weekend!

It’s that time of year again where it’s best to put all your eggs in one basket, Easter eggs we mean!

Is it just us or was Christmas two seconds ago and now we’re at the tail end of March…? While hottie crotties have been available since the start of January (Coles, we’re looking at you!), the Easter long weekend is upon us and what better way to spend FOUR WHOLE DAYS off than treating yourself to the ultimate indulgences – chocolate, family time, the right amount of vitamin D and of course, vino to match it all!

(Image via @Anna.mac_)

So, to make your Easter Long weekend all the more enjoyable, we’ve put together the perfect tipples to enjoy this long weekend. We know you’ll be consuming an abundance of chocolate eggs on Easter Sunday morning, because there is no such thing as ‘balance’ on long weekends.

Preparing a seafood feast for your fam this Good Friday? To enhance the delicate mild flavours of delicious market sourced fish like sea bass or flathead tails – think fresh, crisp whites to marry with. Our recommendation? Our favourite Riverland local – Screaming Betty Vermentino by the Delinquenté boys (featuring in our ‘Fresh Whites’) or a casual, zesty Pacha Mama Riesling (featuring in our ‘If you love Riesling’ pack!). If fish and chips from your local is more the vibe, go for a crisp sparkling like our absolute favourite Kate Hill Sparking, to perfectly cut through the richness of batter.

So the Easter long weekend is all about the chocolate, right? Well not really, but if Easter Sunday is anything like ours, you’ll have chocolate eggs and Lindt gold bunnies in absolute abundance. We all know chocolate and wine goes down an absolute treat (pun intended), so what drop works best with what variety? Here’s our low-down!

White chocolate: we hear you, it’s not actually chocolate. You know the key ingredient, cocoa? That’s missing, so yeah, not chocolate. Anyway it’s out there, and best suited with fruity and delicate reds like our light Pacha Mama Pinot Noir (Featuring in our ‘Light Reds’).

Milk chocolate: Mmm Lindt gold bunnies. Does anyone else feel like they have these in the house for 6 months after? Milk chocolate is traditionally the go-to for Easter, and that smooth creamy taste matches perfectly with a sweeter red blend, like our Jericho GSM Grenache Shiraz Mouvedre.

Dark Chocolate – our total fave and ultimate vice! A delicious 70% or more cocoa is full of rich chocolate-y flavour, with a hint of bitterness, rather than that sickly sweet taste. Our recommendation? Any drop in our ‘Big Reds’ pack will suit just fine.

Whatever you eat, or how much, there is no judgement here. We love any excuse to indulge in a few of our favourite things! Have a safe Easter Long weekend girlfriend!

Their wine passion grew from the early stages and only naturally did it breed a deep-seeded love for winemaking and all that comes with it. With an innate desire to keep their wine making practices as clean and green as possible and a quick trip to Europe to experience the old-world techniques first hand, the team behind Blind Corner set out to create their very own winery that blends the old with the new, to create more natural wines that taste great that they are proud of, and we are too!

In our range:

Blind Corner Rouge (Cabernet Merlot) – Rich, full-bodied, with the silkiness of a merlot. Featured in our ‘Flix Mix’ Pack & ‘Green Is Good’ pack.

With a background in advertising and a true passion for wine and his Riverland roots, Greg knew there was an opportunity to produce high-quality wine, taking full advantage of Riverland’s small vineyards planted with Southern Italian varieties. Greg works with grapes from trusted growers who work organically, and his wines are vegan-friendly, handmade and small-batch with an aim to make wine that is pure, easy-drinking and truly delicious with edgy, eye-catching labels and hilarious descriptions. If you haven’t, you seriously need to.

The Festive season and gorgeous drops, our perfect match!

There is a certain charm about the festive season, it’s our favourite time of year! Nothing is more special than spending time with family and friends, sharing old memories and creating new ones, over delicious food and wine – of course!

Christmas is literally days away (we know, we can’t believe it either, what 2017?!) and is such a joyous, indulgent time of year loved by all. But when you’re hosting lunch… well, we understand it can get little hectic! Girlfriend, to get you clinking that glass of bubbles asap, we’ve put together a guide to matching our gorgeous drops with your Christmas feast.

Image via @setmaui

Breaking the fast:

Let’s be honest you’ll be up at 5:30am, the kitchen will be chaotic and wrapping paper will be everywhere! Christmas Day should always start with bubbles and we recommend a simple breakfast that will keep you full enough to get through the morning, but starts the day with a little extra *sparkle*! Champagne and croissants = a match made in heaven. Why not keep it pretty with fresh summer berries from one of our Mornington Peninsula favourites; Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm. Our personal favourite? The light, bright and fruity Range Life Prosecco, King Valley (VIC), which is part of our ‘All Bubbles’ 6 & 12 pack.

Simple Starters:

When curating your cheeseboard #goals, aim for different flavours and textures. Think a spiced pear paste, fresh figs, soft rich cheeses and crunchy biscuits. Delicious Binnorie Dairy dill chèvre from the Hunter Valley (NSW) & the Caprino, Romano style creamy goats cheese from Main Ridge (VIC) are on our list and marry perfectly with fresh, crisp whites. We recommend a Riverland local with citrus soul and sass… Screaming Betty. A vermentino sourced from Delinqueté Wine Co and part of our ‘Fresh Whites’ pack.

image via Pinterest

Zesty, floral whites, match perfectly with smoked salmon and cream cheese, and we have the easiest, most delicious canapé to start the festive feast; Salmon pancake wraps. Just six ingredients that you can prep the night before and leave in the fridge till serving time. These go down an absolute treat with our Gran Sasso Pinot Grigio, from Abruzzo Italy, featured in our ‘Fresh Whites’ pack.

The main delight…whatever your tradition may be!

Whether you’re more of a seafood family, or you like to keep it traditional, we’ve got the perfect drops to match whatever is on the menu! A balmy Christmas day and seafood are the dream team and if this is more your style, Manettas Seafood in Sydney deliver straight to your door. Meaning  less time spent at the market! Our perfect match? Krinklewood Wild White from Hunter Valley (NSW). This delicious drop is a biodynamic, refreshing white wine, as featured in our ‘Fresh Whites’ pack.

If you’re keeping to the classics with traditional baked ham and turkey, put your little twist on it with modern, seasonal salads. We’re drawing inspo from Hetty McKinnon’s ‘Community’ book and her salad recipes from Arthur Street Kitchen. When pairing with reds, keep it light and fruity. We suggest the Glaezter-Dixon Nouveau Pinot, Coal Valley (TAS) included in our ‘Relaxed Reds’ pack.

Image via Pinterest

The sweetest finish:

We know it’s almost impossible to fathom dessert by the end, but ’tis the season for indulgence, right?! Of course there is always room for a traditional fruity plum pudding, best matched with a richer drop. Or delight your fam with something a little different with Donna Hay’s brandy-maple ice cream panettone, seriously delicious. Both sweet treats relish perfectly with Pacha Mama Shiraz from Heathcote, a medium bodied drop with an intense fruity flavour of freshly crushed raspberries and subtle oak, and part of our ‘Relaxed Reds’ pack.

Image via @setmaui

If you order by December 17 (Free Aus wide metro delivery), or last minute orders by December 20 for Melbournians only, we’ll ensure to deliver by the 25th, straight to your door. So you can tick drinks off your extensive preparation list!

We’re wishing you a very Merry Christmas, spent with your loved ones, a little too much food and delicious wine!

What we’re drinking this Spring Racing Season!

Yes Way Rosé!

So the flowers have well and truly blossomed, the wintery air has gone and the festive season is literally right around the corner (Thanks Myer for reminding us with your big Christmas trees). This means it’s official, Rosé all day season is here AKA The Spring Racing Carnival… and we’re not mad about it.

With the weather warming up, we’re feeling increasingly rosier and when it comes to warm-weather drinking and Spring Racing season in Melbourne, pink is definitely the new white.

Whether your heading trackside and hosting pre drinks, or simply throwing an afternoon BBQ together with your best friends on Melbourne Cup Day with a little healthy competition betting, Rosé is the perfect (and prettiest) drop this spring racing season. We want to share with you what we’ll be drinking (Rosé this way —>)

While some race goers may think Melbourne Cup Day is a great excuse to drink like a delinquent and end up with heels in hand by the end of the day, we’re much more refined than that. This season we’ll be sipping on a cheeky ‘Delinquente Wine Co  Pretty Boy Rosato’, from Riverland, South Australia.

Grown and produced by a younger generation wine maker, this pale pink drop is  modern, with sophisticated qualities, designed for easy drinking. Produced from harvested Nero D’Avola, the famous black grape from Sicily, this pretty boy smells oh so sweet but with the “swagger of Mick Jagger” says Winemaker Greg Grigoriou. Think hints of summer berries but crisp and dry. Its fun, bright, and bubbly making it the perfect Spring Racing season drink!

We’ve done all the hard work for you, Pretty Boy Rosato is part of our Rosé feature pack – “Perfect Pinks.” This gorgeous pack features crisp, fresh and summery wines, sourced from vineyards around Australia and Italy, delivered straight to your door!

The property contains a cellar door, restaurant, and a cosy place to stay the weekend. This intimate space is interiors rich, full of rustic and moody tones, creating an earthy and inviting atmosphere inspired by the Even Keel wine label, which couples perfectly a locally sourced, seasonal menu.

Polperro Winery can be enjoyed no matter the season. During the winter months, we’ve enjoyed the cosy retreat for long lunches, a bottle of 2016 Mornington Peninsula pinot noir and the outdoor fire pits. As it heats up, we’re looking forward to balmy afternoons on the deck, a cheese board and a cheeky glass (or two) of 2016 sangiovese rosé.

The Even Keel by Polperro Rosé features in our Pretty Pinks (available in 6 & 12 packs) & rosé gift pack. This delicious drop is  handpicked, whole bunched pressed and gently made. Yay for rosé! This drop is made for summer drinking, a dry style with a hint of red berry fruits and rose, and a crisp refreshing finish. We suggest to pair it with a charcuterie plate, your best girlfriends, and a fine day. We recommend a Sunday drive to Polperro By Even Keel for an afternoon of vinos, quality service, gorgeous food & better company. We’ll cheers to that!
