Good sips from AM to PM at Higher Ground

Behind the doors of this unsuspecting eatery swells a maelstrom of BHE (big hospo energy). Think spunky, modernised day-to-dusk nosh on an industrial-but-beautiful backdrop in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD.

Sure, we come here partially for the ‘gram. A soaring ceiling, rugged, exposed brickwork and plenty of foliage softening up the rough edges, makes it the ideal setting for some brunch snaps. But this striking warehouse-meets-cafe has gained its cult following and hungry regulars through its strong wine list, affinity with events, specialty coffee and freelancer-friendly space. When it comes to cafe courtship, Higher Ground reminds us that chivalry is indeed alive.

In the AM, you can find us gorging on superbly puffed-up ricotta hotcakes, drizzled in maple syrup and studded with seeds, grains, cream, seasonal fruits and flowers. If it’s a savoury appetite that needs to be sated, it’s all about the braised seasonal mushies, or the drool-worthy chorizo bolognese toastie. Yep, you read that right.

When your hunger spikes in the evening after a day of back-to-back meetings, dinner at HG promises the pairing of a good plate with a bloody good pour. (Just how we like it). To escape from the peak hour city rush, take refuge here and pore over the impressively curated night-time menu.

If fruits of the sea are on your summer dining wishlist, opt for the Market Fish served with leeks, pickled Springbay mussels and XO mayonnaise. To wash it down? Quaff the Dagger Pinot Grigio, hailing from King Valley, Victoria.

Carnivores craving something extra hearty will rejoice at the chargrilled grass-fed Porterhouse, accompanied by Jerusalem artichoke, soubise and a mouthwatering truffle dressing. Our poison of choice to reach for in between bites of this mighty feed is the Jericho Tempranillo from SA’s vine ripen Adelaide Hills.

Find yourself still salivating over that delicious drop? What Sunday Wine Co and Higher Ground have in common is superb taste in wine. We’ve stashed the Dagger Pinot Grigio in our crisp, zesty Fresh Whites wine pack, and that glorious Jericho Termpranillo in our Light Reds trio. For when the CBD isn’t on your agenda, or you’re wanting another glass after retreating home for the night, have your go-to sip delivered straight to the door. (So you can kick on with some Netflix and a face mask).

Built upon the fundamentals of good people, great conversation and glorious coffee, the crew at Higher Ground have strived to make a hangout where people from all ‘burbs of Melbs and beyond can convene for some quality fare.

Whether you’re booking next week’s brunch in for the 100th time with the gals, or you’re planning to swing by for work knockoffs soon, we feel a HG session coming very soon.
